depends what u mean by "keeping your own"

id throw another one in and keep the original and rebuild it myself, maybe some performance work when the cash falls my way

I brought a bottom end for $50 and a head for $20 I rebuilt the engine my self and had the head done at a workshop. Head cost $200 for a full rebuild, a big valve head.
Re-ring and rebuild kit cost $120 ish and clutch cost $80. Tools were another expense but only a ring compressor and torque wrench.

Build your own, its a bit of fun and you learn heaps.

If you're mechanically minded, rebuilding your own is a good way to learn, as Tex said. You can also build a really strong motor by being able to do a bit at a time as funds allow.
Having a changeover motor done is more expensive, but quicker and you get a warranty. If you're not confident in your own work, there's no comeback!
Having your own motor done takes a bit more time but you don't have to worry about changing engine numbers with the rego authorities.

Yonnee.
