Do you mean there is a spark jumping from the negative side of the coil to an earth somewhere?
I would say that maybe your coil lead is shagged, and has too much resistance, not letting the spark through. Instead, it is shoring out near where coil bolts to the inner guard, and it simply looks like the negative terminal is sparking.
Use a multimeter and check lead resistance, should not me more than 10000 ohms.

i had a problem like that, the spark was jumping out and earthin on the guard, but that was because of a small crack in the bit where the lead goes on....
but yeah it sounds like something to do with the coil and/or the leads....
