i've just placed a reconed head in my gemi, it runs but when i put my foot down theres a serious lack of acceleration. I don't know whats relevant buts heres a few things i've noticed:
It takes a bit to get it started and after a heap of fidling with the distributor and accelerator cable its idling average. I'm assuming its the carby but fuel seems to be jetting into the carby when i pump the lever (i'm not really mechanical so i don't know how much or from where it should be coming from) however the butterfly thing in the carby seems to just stay in the upright position (does this mean something could be wrong there?).
The timing seems alright, but the exhaust pipe seems to suck in on about every third stroke, thats seems seriously wrong but i don't know if its related.
I have a mechanical fuel pump, which has one disconnected hose, one hose running to the carby and two from fuel lines, the two fuel lines both have fuel filters on them and have a steady flow of fuel, although this is the setup before the head change does it sound right, could it be part of the problem, has any one got a diagram??
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance. |

i had something similar happen when I rebuilt the motor in my old Gem. It took a bit of revs to get it going and just wouldnt rev at all. Turned out to be the cam timing was out by one link and it made a hell of a difference. |

i've got the same problem, still don't know what it is yet, my mechanic suggested i get the carby rejetted and retuned so i'll do that when i get all my headwork done. |

Sounds to me like either your cam timing is out a bit or your carby is playing up. could be a gay dwell angle/timing combination but I doubt that. Also that butterfly that you are seeing constantly in the vertical position is the choke butterfly so dont worry bout it. |

ok,
pop off your rocker cover, and manually turn your engine over till the timing mark is at 0 (tdc) on the scale. then, put it in gear, and remove the bolt on the end of the crankshaft, that is holding the fanbelt pulley on [the big one].
now, you will see a key...a groove in the pulley's internals, its kinda big, so you cant miss it.
if you need to, remove the mech fuel pump cam from the end of the camshaft, and replace the bolt, so the damn wheel dont come of.
now your cam timing is perfect if the dowl hole on the cam sprocket, and the key on the crank are both pointing straight up at the same time...the 2 bolts left on the crank should be exactly level.
if its not pointing straight up at the same time as your crank, loosen all the bolts on your rocker studs, and adust the cam till it is.
then re-assemble, check valve clearance, check static timing, and it should be fine. if it backfires and dont start, your ignition is 180deg out.
hope this helps some.

I'm stumped on the crank shaft bolt, any ideas on how to loosen it up or get it off? |
