How exactly does too much timing advance cause the starter to hesitate? I wouldn't think it would stop it from cranking over. Can high compression make it hesitate?

Anyways, my gem only turns over about 1/2 a rev when it's cold - i drained my battery trying to start it this morning. Goes fine when its warm. It's on 6 deg static adv. Is it time to get a new starter?

Generally, timing is set in the advanced position, meaning the spark occurs before the pistons reaches top dead centre. If too advanced, the force from combustion will force the piston down in its bore before reaching the top of its stroke, trying to spin the motor backwards, opposite what starter motor is trying to do.

High compression will slow down cranking, but not make it hesitate.

Your timing sounds fine. i would check that the battery terminals have a good connection and are clean, same with earth strap going to engine, and power cable going to back of starter motor.
