5sp gearbox

i have decided to get a 5sp

anythin to look out for when talkin one from the wreckers, for example can i tell if it will run good or not.

yeah! make sure its a 5speed b4 u take it home!!!!!!!! fuck iv taken like 3 home only to find out it was a 4 speed and have to take it bak!

check how 'free' and smooth, gear changes are without crunching or knocking at all. if possible check if the top end bearing is noisy (turn the bearing and if its noisy at such a low speed as a twist of your hand, you can bet it'll be a bitch once in your car), thats usually a good sign of a deteriorating box too. um yeah.

You can do the checks greg has suggested, but they will tell you stuff all. Worn bearings may not be detected by such tests. IT may shift smoothly, but if the synchros are f*cked, it wont shift smoothly in operation.

Buying a g/box from the wreckers is a lucky dip. When they give you a 30 day warranty, be prepared to install , and de-install it again within the 30 days , if it isnt coming up to scratch.

The wreckers generally dont want to rip you off, but they sure dont bend over backward either to make sure what they give you is exactly what they say it is.
