I got a reco motor installed several months ago. The gears were tighter and over several weeks got tighter and reverse started to crunch. First was very tight but the other gears were ok. The mechanic tightened the clutch cable about an inch when i took it back. It was fine for a few months and then reverse crunched really bad and I had to jam it in. First crunched a little on occasions but remained very tight. The mechanic again adjusted the cable and said that he has to lift it up and have a proper look. The gears don't crunch at the moment but the car makes winding noises when a put the clutch in or when I first start the car. Any ideas? Sorry for the long post.

my gearbox (4spd), has fukt up bearings, and when the cluth is in, there is silence, but when you let it go, you can faintly hear a little noise, hard to describe but very faint, bit like a electric shaver under the car?

chris.

No, it is the same gearbox. There were never any problems before reco, and soon as I drove out from the mechanics I felt that the gears were a lot tighter. Adjusting the clutch cable fixed the problem but they start crunching after a while. Reverse does anyway.

That noise your gearbox makes when your clutch is out is probably the thrust bearing.

My gearbox has the same problem, silence with clutch in, noise when driving. Although mine isn't quite because of the same reason, there is nothing wrong with my bearings. Something a little simpler. There is a slight vibration in the gear stick that is being resonated/amplified through the plastic gear knob! Put on a rubber knob and the noise goes away, bloody thing.

The noise probably is your throwout bearing, because your mechanic has over adjusted it,not allowing for any free play in the bearing,{the throwout bearing is constantly riding on the clutch pressure plate,it wont last long,he has probably done this to compensate for the fact your pressure plate is not disengaging, your car will need a complete clutch kit.

Just got my car back and the problem was that a wire on the inside of the pressure plate snapped.
