just wondering........are there any markings on a gearbox which indicate its a 4 or 5 speed( i have a one sitting in the boot of a TD, not sure of the speed, shifter isnt fitted)

The rear extension housing, where it bolts up to the rest of the box, will have a bulge at the bottom. If this bulge extends backwards about two inches, it's a four speed. If the bulge is about six to eight inches, it's a five.
Even without the shifter, if you look down throught the quadrant box you'll see three shafts, all with a slot in them. When the slots are lined up, the box is in neutral. If you can move the left-hand shaft backwards, it's got 5.

Easiest check is look for th bolt holes on top of the rear ext housing for the remote shift which came on the twin cams. 4 speeds dont have it.
