I pulled out the rear axle of my 82 tf and when I took the extention shaft out of the torque tube there was a heap of small stones on and around the pinion but the thing that got me was that there were also stones on the inside of shaft coupling. Has anyone seen this before because I can't understand how they would get in there. Is there a way I can stop it happening in the futre.

At first I thought they were chips of metal seeing as the diff was stuffed but when I took a closer look they were small black stones, the same that are used in roads.
