i've been hearing that balancing the bottom end of an engine is good but i rang a mechanic and he said he wouldn't bother. quoi le? also, if i got a smaller head would i blow more head gaskets? why is porting a head good, as wouldn't it lower compresssion? sorry bout the questions, but what would the redline be of a g200, 1600 head, mild cam, exhaust?
cheers

Balancing an engine is not black and white, if you are building a budget engine, then its a step you could probably skip, but I would be balancing any high revving engine, as it only costs about $160.
It will make the engine smoother in the higher rpm range, reducing stress on componentry and possibly extending the rev range of the engine slightly.
You wont blow head gaskets at all if you dont let your engine detonate, which means having the right air/fuel ratio, running the right fuel and the correct amount of ignition timing for any given load and rpm.
Porting is the grinding of the ports, not the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber should also be done for best results, but as you said, this can lower compression ratio. However this is not really a concern when running a 1600 head on a 2 litre bottome end, as the compression ratio can be anywhere up to 12:1, depending on the size of the combustion chamber.
Spend some money on a big cam, why go mild when you can go wild. The bigger cam will effectively reduce your compression ratio and hopefully save your engine from detionation, unless you are happy running avgas all the time.
Max power would be made around mid 5500's somewhere with the mild cam, redline is just before your engine blows up. I wouldnt rev the thing past 6500, especially with stock valve springs and a points dizzy. It might not even make it to 6500, G200's are reknowned for being low revvers. Besides, you might get valve bounce or something before that.
Cheers!

yeah...
.... so let me try and clear something up ... if you are looking for top end power the G161 or G180 (SOHC) engines are the way to go ... however ... if you are looking for torque and better skids the G200 will produce lower rev range power ... but will not extend into the top end ... ???
...so what about the G180 and G200 twin cam engines ... do these engines produce both torque and top end power ...where should i put my money ????
I have heard too many different opinions on this topic !!!! |

Do you want another? hehe
I reckon to skip the DOHC engines, purely from a bang for buck POV. You are right, the g200 will be a grunter, not such a bad thing, and it would be good turboed or supercharged. I would be thinking it has a faster takeoff and better corner exit.
The g180 will be what, 500-1000RPM better, for what? Building a high revving possibly turboed SOHC doesn't make as much sense as a DOHC engine...
THE well known fact:
There's no substitute for cubic inches
I will be taking the g200 option once my screamin g161 fails to wipe the smile off a few faces |

I have to admit that I have never driven a G180, but I do know that worked G200 can really rev, like keep pulling out to 6 grand, it would keep revving, but the car didn't accelerate an quicker.
It depends on what you do to your engine. Cylinder pressure has a lot to do with how quick and how high your engine likes to rev. To get high cylinder pressure, you either need high compression or forced induction.
If you were spending $1000 on either a G180 or G200, the 2 litre will be the quicker engine in the car.
