Also cause its 20 yr old steel.

Aww that'd be so sweet if the panels were alum. or something nice and light

yep 20 yrs old and the build quality probably wasn't as good back then

the front guard behind the wheel is prone to rust due to poor design. Mud stones and shit flick up from the road and sit behind the mud flaps. I removed mine and dug out a whole bucket of mud. Make sure you dig out the mud regularly to prevent rust.

It's not so much as build quality as the fact that they don't have time machines. There is basically one way to see if a design will rust, and thats to try it. By the time the rust sets in, the car has stopped production and it's too late to fix the problems. However, you have to wonder whether they were using their brains at all in some circumstances.
Take my favourite car, the LX Torana Hatch for instance. on the C pillars, Holden designed this wonderful little join..underneath the top panel, there are a whole bunch of little channels and tunnels and shit. If the idea was to trap water and dirt and create a 100% guaranteed rust magnet...well, Holden definately get a 15 out of 10 for that.
