After starting my car and fixing the leaking vacuum (was only the fuel regs vacuum hose clamp a bit loose making it whistle), the tubo makes a strange noise at about 1000rpm and above (im guessing coz i dont want to give it any gas). The noise is like a sqealing sort or rubbing, sort of like a blunt drill bit trying to cut metal. I took the comp cover off and the turbo certainly doesnt rub on the housing, as it is new and has minimal movement, and there was no sign of damage to any blades. There is oil in it and it still makes the noise. Its weird too coz it sort of turns on and off, like you dont hear it for 2 seconds, then your hear it for 2, it stops for 4, and goes for 3.
I dont want to run it anymore coz I dont want to stuff anything.
Any ideas what it is? |

its weird this noise. It goes and stops for ages, and after i warmed the car up it stopped. Hopefully it never comes back.

I was a bit worng about the lengths of time I said. The times were much longer and it probably isnt as bad as it sounded in the post. And once it was warm i didnt hear it at all. |

Hey man, I posted on PF and you replied there too about yours runnign for however long with no oil.
Yeah its BB, the noise is odd as it happenns and then stops for a while, then does it, and then stops when its warm. So I have no idea. Ive had my mechanic mates listen but they dont know. I think I need a turbo specialist.

Yeah that turbo didnt make any noise before the bearing collapsed but the turbo i replaced it with makes the noise you describe.. Gets a bit quieter when it warms up, farkin annoying i'm going to rebuild the original one which blew up. But with a brand new turbo it shouldn't make any noise at all! |

Well this one stops all torgether when its warm. I got the turbo with about 1000km's on it, so really it is brand new. Im not sure what i'll do about it, it doesnt sound good, but i was talking to someone last night who has driven alot of smaller turboed trucks and says that some have made that same sort of noise, and that it wasnt really a problem. We'll see i guess.
