just want some info on tinting my rear lights on my tg gem
if uve done the mod how did ya go bout it???

All i know is you can use a can of NightShades black spray paint. Mr_Gemi has done it (dunno if he did it using spray paint) also talk to HypaTG, he used nightshades.

...but remember, it may also be illegal to tint the light lenses. Check your State regulations before you do it.

To be honest I think it's illegal in all states. If it ADR rules cover it, then it means it's going to be in all states.

It's strange how things are or have been permitted to be sold but you can't illegally use them.

Like radar detectors, millitary rifles, x rated movies, fireworks, and the list goes on....

It's legal to sell the taillight tint for off-road use. Same as musical horns, coloured park lights, LED washer jets, etc.
To answer your question, there's two ways to do it. Firstly mask and paint the outside. It's quick, easy and looks like sh!t up close, but it does the job. The other way is to pull the lenses off the bases (carefully), tint the inside of the lenses, then glue the lenses back. It's alot more time consuming and fiddly, but a much better job.

i was drifting with 5 peopel in teh gem new years eve lest yr and a cop saw me and started to brake and turn around so i did a mad dash downa a few side streets and parked the car about 5 min later we about to go again then at the top of the steet see this cop car reversing lol justa warnign though

A lot of Mitsubishi's come from the factory with tinted tailights ie 85-88 Cordia Turbo and early 90's Pajeros. are you guys sure its illegal?

The info on the DOTARS site is just a sketchy guideline but I think that altering the color of the lens or the intensity of the light output both may breach the Australian Safety Standards.

By using a higher wattage globe to increase the brightness, you also increase the heat inside the light unit. This can damage the lens.

Keep in mind lights are safety items and standards are in place to assure we all conform. Lights are there to mark differing points of a car so you can estimate it's orientation at a glance, to signal intent (i.e. brakes and indicators) and for the driver to see in the dark.

There are also specifications covering distances from the ground as well as distances apart lights must be. Some vehicles are exempt from these rules (eg. MK1 and MK2 and MK2a Landrovers) where the headlights are closer together than the prescribed distance.

Some later model vehicles (eg. Nissan Patrols) have unused lights on the body and a set of operational lights on the rear bumper bar to conform with Australian standards.
