I got a good running bottom end from a friend.
I put a fully recoed head on.
Set valve timming with all the marks lined up.
Turned key and BANG,the carby spat back and was on fire.
What the hell have I done?

Your timing is probably wrong. IF you think everything is right, take out the dizzy and make sure the oil pump is installed properly. At No 4 TDC, the smaller offset should be towards the back of the engine. IF its towards the front , the plug wires need to be reversed 180 degrees on the cap.

Dont run nitromethane, and you wont have fire coming out your carb. Wink

You didnt really have fire , did you? Just a little flame?

Yes just a little flame but enough to scare the shite out of me.
With the leads do you meen put No1 where No4 is and follow on from there?

Just went and done it and it works.
So what have I done to end up 180deg out?

yep swap 1 and 4, 2 and three.

There is a correct way to align the oil pump. But lots of people just stick it in any way. so thats why when you tune a car, trust no one b4 you. Find No 1 TDC, and make sure the distrib. rotor points to No 1 lead.
