yeah, i have a g161 1600, stock motor, good exhaust ect.,
but its been giving me grief lately. runs great below 2900
rpm, but hit 3 grand, and the barstard dies/ splutters/ complains, and the tacho jumps between 5-6 grand and 0. any ideas?...., car runs gas as well, and it has the same problem as petrol...no compression loss, good timing...its got me completely buggerd. so, any ideas?..ps, i think i may win the award for "most unluckiest gem owner" if there is such a thing.(2 engines, 1 gearbox, 2 mufflers,3 carbies,
rust, rust, rust, rust,1 gas mixer, 1 condenser, 2 dizzies, and heaps of other shit.)my car is a warning to others..>;> |

Just an idea or two to rule a few things out as the culprit/s... How is your fuel pump? Or any other fuel related parts for that matter (besides the new carb you mentioned). Check from the pick-up in the tank thru to your fuel filter if you haven't already that is. Check to see there is consistent resistance in your leads with a multimeter and obviously check your plugs if you also haven't already as well.
just out of curiosity, is it a manual or a traumatic auto? If it's an auto, the problem may be there (bands, torque convertor etc.)- but that's purely a guess.
Hope it's a cheap and easy problem to fix and your cursed days are over soon.

it sounds electrical to me... if your car is moving (say, at 60km/h) and your foot is off the clutch, any spluttering isnt going to make a vast difference on your cars revs, for the cars rolling energy will keep the engine turning....
but if your tacho is bouncing down to 0 while this is happening, there must be a problem with the ignition, ie. it cutting out, causing spluttering and the tachos bad readings.
try replacing, one at a time if ya want:
-points
-red/black wire between coil/points
-coil
-balast resistor
-spark leads
-dizzy cap
-dizzy rotor
-spark plugs
also, there could be a slight chance that the wire leading from coil/points could be shorting out on an earth somewhere (even the wire that leads to tacho from this) so check these too.
id place my money on the coil or fractured ignition wire tho
hope this helps!

Sounds like your ignition coil or the lead going to the dizzy is stuffed or bad connection, also check the wires on the coild to make sure they are connecting well. Would be good to also check the button and rotor in the dizzy and cap.

check there isnt a crack in ur rotor button or if the screw that holds the little resistor thing (sorry for the untechnical name!) on the front of the dizzy isn't loose and arking out. A few weeks ago, actually xmas eve on the way up to my g/f's place, i would hit 2500 rpm or so and it would do what u are describing. Checked the dizzy and when i gave it a rev there was a spark arking out of the screw hole. Luckily though i didn't lose the screw!
