Hi I am changing the Gear box from a 4spd to a 5.
The reason I got a spare 5 sitting there but the car wont go into 3rd gear at high speeds and it's a bitch to drag cos U r trying to get it into 3rd but the bitch wont go, anyway do I have to change the tail shaft as well and put the 5spd tail shaft on?
and wheres the best place to start while changing it?
take the shaft off and then just drop the box???? |

You'll only have to cghange the shaft over if the splines dont match. Some models have a coarse spline, others a fine.
Disconnect the shaft and loosen the bolts holding the back of the box. Raise the front of the engine slightly with a jack and block of wood under the sump. You can just squeeze the box out using 2 car ramps but for ease use some stands. |

Look into the workshop area and you will find an article on changing the gearbox.
The bit about raising the engine slightly under the sump I forgot to put in...... |

There is a tip on that to, just canibalise a tailshaft for the front yoke then whack it in to stop the oil leaking out. |

Yeah thats one of the best tools you can make yourself. And you'd be suprised how many other boxes are the same size. Comes in handy a lot. |
