what is its purpose? i've got one hangin around up the back. dont know why i should or shouldn't put it on.

there meant to help lower compression to i think there usally used in turbo cars

They are meant to be stronger than a normal head gasket.

If for some reason (high boost, high compression etc) you keep blowing head gaskets you might want to try a copper one... if you don't have any troubles, don't bother putting it on, it won't improve anything.

I believe they are just a stronger version of the regular type.

If you are running turbo or high comp and you keep blowing them then a copper one is usually used so it doesnt blow.

Sometimes it's better to leave a normal one on if you dont need to have a copper one, better your gasket blows than having your head crack

Most engines can handle high comp or boost pretty well as far as gaskets go. Some are a bit more temprimental and blow easier so a copper is a good idea to stop that.

A good example is the old supras, the engine was prone to blowing gaskets at high revs due to the factory torque settings being a bit off. The solution was to fit a copper gasket instead of risking cranking the head on too tight.
