in order to keep it legal would i need to strengthen the chasis and or put some emissions shit on the gem ?

In VIC anything under 2L can be forced. You will need to maintain the pollution standards of the time, however the legal requirements will not mean you need to strengthen the chassis or brakes.

If you were to supercharge yr gem a sensible move would be a brake upgrade, even if it were only the fronts.

Anything above 2L requires an engineers cert down here.
