Without tearing it down for a rebuild:
Stick on a Cortina DGV Weber
extractors
2" exhaust
Bosch GT40 coil
new points, plugs and leads
Get the DGV reconned before putting it on, and get it set up by a carby specialist (you can put it on with an adaptor plate, but it's hard to set the mixtures)
Then you've got some good stuff for when you DO tear it down and do it up |

Ok, budget, it always comes down to money.
a) $0 check/set the tappets, dwell and initial advance.
b) $50 buy a TX coupe manifold and weld it onto your current exhaust.
c) $120 stick in a mild or not so mild cam
d1) $160 buy a set of extractors for your current exhaust
d2) $160 buy a 2 inch exhaust for your stock manifold
e) $300 a full two inch exhaust with extractors (new)
f) $300-$500 pull of the head, it should be the big valve head (as yours is a TD) so have it shaved & ported and rebuilt replacing any bits which need replacing.
g) $500-$900 twin 44mm IDF webers tuned to suit.
h) $1200-$1400 rebuilt and balanced G180 bottom end, flat deck height, lightened and balanced flywheel, ported & polished G161 head with smoothed, polished and CCed combustion chambers, ported and matched manifolds and 30/70 cam.
option (h) will go hard on its own, but combine (h) with (g) and (e) and you will go about as hard as you can expect from a N/A G series motor. Of course they can be made to go harder but I like a motor that can idle along in 5 gear at 160km/h AND more importantly to me at 60km/h. |
